Tornado causes widespread damage to more than 100 homes near Houston, Texas
2+ hour, 29+ min ago (466+ words) More than 100 homes were damaged Monday afternoon after a tornado ripped through Harris County, Texas, Constable Mark Herman said in a Facebook post. No serious injuries or deaths have been reported after the storm, said Brian Murray, spokesperson for the Harris County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. Earlier, authorities were combing through the debris searching for residents who may have been trapped or injured after the storm passed. The National Weather Service has confirmed a tornado struck the county, but has yet to rate the storm's intensity. Severe storms developed in the Houston area on Monday afternoon, where warm temperatures were in place ahead of a cold front. An unstable atmosphere combined with wind shear produced supercell thunderstorms, which resulted in several tornado reports. The constable called the storm a "severe weather event" that caused "widespread and significant…...
Wilmington Police Department seeking grant to give every officer a body camera
2+ hour, 30+ min ago (491+ words) WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - The Wilmington Police Department (WPD) is seeking roughly $340,000 in federal grant funding to purchase new body cameras. City council passed a resolution unanimously at their Nov. 5 meeting, authorizing City Manager Becky Hawke to apply for the grant. The grant would require the city to commit about $170,000 total in matching funds over a three-year period. Roughly $57,000 of that match will be required in the 2026 fiscal year, and can be covered within the city's current budget, according to the resolution. If approved, every WPD officer would have their own Axon body camera. Currently, only officers who typically work in the field do, though others who don't have cameras do fill in on certain assignments in the field where there's a need, according to the department. Lt. Greg Willett said WPD uses the camera footage frequently, as evidence in court cases…...
It's a bird! It's a plane! It's a rare Superman comic book! And it fetched $9.12M!
3+ hour, 4+ min ago (420+ words) A copy of the first Superman issue, unearthed by three brothers cleaning out their late mother's attic, netted $9.12 million this month at a Texas auction house, which says it is the most expensive comic book ever sold. The brothers discovered the comic book in a cardboard box beneath layers of brittle newspapers, dust, and cobwebs in their deceased mother's San Francisco home last year, alongside a handful of other rare comics that she and her sibling had collected on the cusp of World War II. "It was just in an attic, sitting in a box, could have easily been thrown away, could've easily been destroyed in a thousand different ways," Allen said. "A lot of people got excited because it's just every factor in collecting that you could possibly want all rolled into one." The "Superman No. 1" comic, released in 1939 by…...
Court order prevents LA coroner from releasing details of teen's body found in singer d4vd's Tesla
3+ hour, 38+ min ago (401+ words) Los Angeles police have blocked the county coroner's office from releasing details about the death of a teen girl whose body was found in the trunk of a car registered to the singer d4vd, the medical examiner's office said Monday. Celeste Rivas Hernandez was found dead on Sept. 8 in an impounded Tesla in Los Angeles just after her 15th birthday. Several news outlets reported the car belonged to d4vd, whose legal name is David Anthony Burke, 20. The order came several days after multiple Los Angeles TV stations reported police consider the Houston-born alt-pop singer a suspect, citing anonymous sources. The LA Police Department has not confirmed that and d4vd's lawyer Blair Berk did not respond to request for comment on Monday. LAPD Capt. Mike Bland said the security hold was not sought to undermine transparency, but to maintain the integrity of the police…...
